NEW ALBANY, OHIO – Today, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted was his choice to fill the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by JD Vance who becomes the nation’s 50th Vice President on January 20.
Husted, 57, has been a mainstay in Ohio politics for two decades, grew up in Montpelier, Ohio, and has served as DeWine’s lieutenant governor since 2019 following two terms as the Ohio Secretary of State. The Republican also served as House speaker and as a state senator before running for statewide office.
“We congratulate Lieutenant Governor Husted on his upcoming role in the U.S. Senate in representing the state of Ohio,” said Cheryl Day, OPC executive vice president. “We know that he understands the critical and key role that agriculture plays in our state and that we must all work together to overcome to hurdles that our farmers face today if we want to maintain and grow Ohio’s position as an agricultural leader.”
In his announcement, DeWine said he considered three key things before making his choice. These were someone who knows Ohio’s greatness and diversity, someone who can work well with the federal legislative and executive branch, and finally, “someone who will be a workhorse and focus on Ohio.”
