Create Your Secure Pork Supply Plan

Creating your SPS Plan with Dr. Arruda

Preparing for foreign animal disease starts on the farm. No matter the size of your swine operation, every pig farmer plays a vital role in FAD preparedness.

Recent events have made the thought of foreign animal disease more of a reality than ever, which is why developing a Secure Pork Supply (SPS) plan for your farm is a critical step in securing your operation. We know it is a big job, but you do not have to do it alone. Dr. Andreia Arruda and her team at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine are here to assist Ohio pig farmers in developing SPS plans at no cost to you.

If African swine fever is found in the United States, no pigs will move without livestock regulatory officials’ approval. The SPS Plan for Continuity of Business provides ways to prepare and request a movement permit for premises with animals with no evidence of infection.

Dr. Arruda and her team take the anxiety out of writing an SPS plan by streamlining the process for you. The Ohio Pork Council encourages you to reach out to Dr. Arruda so you can tap into their knowledge and expertise to get your SPS plan written today for free.

           Here’s how it works:

            Fill out

             to set up consultations.

Make sure you include your herd veterinarian in the process.

Your data is secured. All participants will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement outlining the protection of the farm’s data.

In addition, Ohio Pork Council Executive Vice President Cheryl Day, along with Ohio Department of Agriculture Brian Baldridge, kept the capacity crowd informed of the show ring events while recognizing those who volunteer to make it all possible, especially the youth mentors and their families who helped prep the legislator participants.

“This continues to be a highlight for us to be able to show our state legislators just what it takes to not only show a pig but to care for it round the clock every day,” Day said. “That’s why we’re so pleased to have so many great youth mentors and their families from our OH-PIGS show pig circuit who step up to assist these lawmakers each year in preparing for the show ring and explaining how they raise these animals on the farm.”

The irresistible scent of smoked pork drew big crowds and fierce competition to the Ohio Pork Council’s 26th Annual Pork Rib-Off, held July 29 at the Ohio State Fair. The beloved cook-off not only celebrated barbecue mastery but also spotlighted the high-quality, nutritious pork that Ohio’s hardworking pig farmers devote their daily passion to producing.

Participants from around Ohio, including many long-time competitors, sought awards in categories for ribs, pulled pork, people’s choice, and barbecue sauce. Baney-Q, Columbus, Ohio, took home Grand Champion Ribs honors; with Lil’ Bear BBQ, Black Lick, Ohio, taking Reserve Champion Ribs honors.

In the pulled pork category, it was Bark Brothers BBQ, Cincinnati, Ohio; taking Grand Champion honors, while Baney-Q took home their second trophy of the day with Reserve Champion.

Rounding out the last two categories, Bark Brothers BBQ won top honors for best BBQ sauce, while Keepers of the Que, from Eldorado, Ohio, won the coveted People’s Choice award for most flavorful pork.

“We’ve been coming to the Ohio Pork Council’s Pork Rib-Off for over 10 years,” said Mark Bergmeier from Bark Brothers BBQ. “We were determined to do better this year, and we did, which we’re very excited about achieving with our pulled pork and BBQ sauce.”

When asked what his secret to winning the People’s Choice award was, Seth Risner of Keepers of the Que, said, “For my family, it’s all about pork every day. It just goes with so many dishes and flavors. The secret is to know how to cook it for maximum flavor by not overcooking it in the first place.”

A group of seasoned judges happily scored the competitors’ entries, including Representative Bob Peterson, Representative Roy Klopfenstein, Senator Tim Schaffer, Senator Rob McColley, and Anthony Dowdy, Executive Store Leader at Giant Eagle.

“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the great judging panel and especially with the crowd we had at this year’s event,” said Saydee Baughman, director of events and promotion at the Ohio Pork Council. “We heard so many great compliments from fairgoers who enjoyed sampling the delicious barbecue created by these talented pork grill masters. We hope that motivates more consumers to put more pork into their daily nutritional routine to bring more flavor into home-cooked meals.”

It’s become a true highlight of the Ohio State Fair for the last three years—the “Breaking Boundaries” Pig Show presented by the Ohio Pork Council (OPC). This inclusive event offers participants between the ages of 9 and 22 with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities the opportunity to shine inside the show arena.

Thanks to the eager and overwhelming response by dozens of youths from across the state who are part of OPC’s OH-PIGS swine exhibition program, each Breaking Boundaries participant was paired with one or more onsite mentors. These mentors then offered individualized and appropriate instructions on how to care for, handle, and show a pig in front of a live audience of supporters and the event’s guest judges, along with the show’s emcee, Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Brian Baldridge.

“We’re so thrilled to have these special youth and their families come out and be a part of this program each year,” said Kelly Morgan, OH-PIGS director. “We are also so proud of youth mentors who truly want to serve in this role to be able to bond with these youth who can often be the same age. It just shows how much the pig community cares.”

Echoing this sentiment is Ava Genter, an OH-PIGS mentor who summed up her feelings on behalf of her peers. “This program highlights how agriculture, and the pork industry in particular, has a strong sense of community. It’s comforting to know that we all look out for each other, including new friends. Breaking Boundaries allows us to demonstrate this and show others that we’re here to support them no matter the circumstances. We’re here to cheer them on and give them the resources they need to succeed.”

Mentors and their families from the OH-PIGS program also provided the event’s show pigs in addition to their knowledge and expertise that they shared during their time with the youth participants.

“For us, it showcases the giving back that our Ohio pig-farming families do in their communities year-round,” said Cheryl Day, executive vice president of OPC. “It’s just a true honor to be in the show arena with these special young people and everyone who is giving of their time and talents to make a difference to these families. We’re incredibly pleased to bring this to the state fair each year and bring some true joy to people.”

Recently, ractopamine-free swine production became a market specification through much of the U.S. pork packing industry. In response, the Ohio Pork Council, Ohio State University Extension, Ohio Department of Agriculture, and Ohio State Fair have collaborated to put a comprehensive plan in place, which can be found in the below documents.

            – After much political debate, Ohio’s pig farmers are thanking Gov. Mike DeWine for signing the $90.5 billion 2026-27 operating budget into law earlier this week as it will help to protect areas of vital importance to keep the state’s number one industry—agriculture—including key provisions critical to the future of the pork industry.

“Although the governor did veto some budget items, the priorities of Ohio’s family pig farmers were all passed into law, allowing our members to rest a little easier knowing that their current and future livelihoods are better protected going forward,” said Cheryl Day, executive vice president of the Ohio Pork Council. “This was a hard-fought win to ensure that Ohio’s swine herd was better protected from foreign animal disease and also ensuring data privacy for our farms who use the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.”

Specifically, the biennial budget approved dedicates funding for the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, keeping the state’s diagnostic labs ready for emerging threats. In addition, $10 million is earmarked to combat the rural veterinary shortage in Ohio, and to establish an emerging infectious disease center. Finally, the H2Ohio water quality program will receive funding to allow for ongoing environmental stewardship needs.

            – While 1 in 7 people in northeast Ohio are food insecure, Ohio’s pig farmers are helping to ease their protein needs by making another donation this summer of $5,000 of nutritious pork to be distributed by the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GFCB).

“This is truly a partnership that we are so fortunate to continue each year with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank,” said Nathan Schroeder, president of the Ohio Pork Council (OPC) and farmer from Leipsic, Ohio. “We know the need for high-quality protein is especially high right now, so we’re pleased to do a small part to help fill the gap that exists and help out fellow Ohioans.”

In providing over 54 million pounds of food and serving more than 424,000 individuals during FY24, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is committed to supporting individuals who are facing food insecurity across Ashland, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Richland counties.

In addition to providing food to these six counties in the northeast Ohio area, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank provided assistance to nearly 39,000 individuals, helping them sign up for SNAP benefits and other resources.

In support of this community-based nonprofit, the Ohio Pork Council, on behalf of Ohio’s pig farmers, has donated $5,000 in nutritious, high-quality, protein-filled pork as a part of their annual Pork Power program.

The donation attempts to reach those in need and provide a reliable protein source for their diet. Ohio pig farmers look to aid the 600 partner agencies of the Mid-Ohio Food Collective in providing healthy, sustainable food to their clients.

           NEW ALBANY, OHIO

            – The Ohio Agricultural Council (OAC) will proudly induct four outstanding individuals into the Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame this year, honoring their remarkable contributions to Ohio agriculture. The 59th annual ceremony, set for August 1, will pay tribute to John H. Davis of Carrollton, the late Steven D. Maurer of Botkins, John Linder of Edison, and most notably for the pork industry, the late Bill Isler of Prospect.

Among the honorees, Bill Isler’s legacy stands as a powerful testament to innovation, leadership, and quiet generosity. A third-generation pork producer, Isler helped grow Isler Farms into a national model of excellence in swine genetics and herd health. Known for being among the first to adopt artificial insemination and SPF (specific pathogen-free) herd standards, Isler’s forward-thinking approach earned him respect and recognition across the U.S. and internationally.

Beyond his role as a producer, Isler gave generously of his time and expertise. He mentored youth through FFA, 4-H, and the Ohio State Fair, and served in leadership roles with the Ohio Pork Council and the National Duroc Board. For more than two decades, his pigs contributed to life-saving human medical research- just one or the many quiet ways he gave back to the greater good.

“Each of these individuals has left a meaningful and lasting imprint on Ohio agriculture,” said Tadd Nicholson, OAC president. “Bill Isler exemplified the spirit of service and innovation in the pork industry, he is truly the type of individual this Hall of Fame was created to honor,” added Ohio Pork Council Executive Vice President, Cheryl Day.

            – A true highlight of the 2025 Ohio Pork Congress was the annual awards presentation by the Ohio Pork Council (OPC) to recognize outstanding contributors to the state’s pork industry. These included the Ohio Pork Industry Excellence, Pork Promoter of the Year, Manager of the Year, and the Friend of Pork Industry. In addition, the inaugural class of Ohio Pork’s Leadership Class was recognized for their dedication to complete the multifaceted yearlong educational process.

In a collaborative effort between the Ohio Pork Council and the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the second annual “Battle for the Bacon” Legislative Pig Showmanship event at the state fair drew 12 legislators from across the state to participate last Wednesday.

All legislative participants were paired with youth mentors from the OH-PIGS circuit led by OPC’s own Kelly Morgan, who prepped the legislators for their showmanship tasks and kept the show’s logistics running smoothly.

After each legislator and mentor was introduced to cheers and applause, the showmanship contest began, and the crowd watched intently as the lawmakers tried their best to keep their animals showing their best.

The two judges weighed the participants’ performance and answers to their questions to make their final choice. Although last year’s inaugural grand champion Rep. Sean Brennan (D-Parma) was formidable in the ring, in the end the judges decided it was Rep. Kevin Miller (R-Newark) who was the 2024 Grand Champion with Reserve Champion honors going to Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.).

In one of the highly anticipated panel discussions at this year’s National Pork Industry Conference held earlier this week in Wisconsin, Pat Hord, CEO of Hord Family Farms, offered his insights into how producers can more effectively share their own sustainability story with the pork chain so that they can continue to sell pork to consumers.

“For our farm, sustainability starts with our core values,” Hord said. “As producers, we need to ask how we can help our chain partners, who we are in business with, what they need to connect better with their customers about sustainability. That means talking about the good things we are doing at the farm level, which will be especially critical with the upcoming demographic changes to consumers that see sustainability as very important.”

“Sustainability as defined by the National Pork Board’s producer leadership is centered on the We Care ethical principles,” said Jamie Burr, chief sustainability officer at NPB and moderator of the panel. “And it’s the goals around the metrics set by our producer leaders of each of these that are critical to ensuring that producers can report and tell the public what sustainability is. In the end, it’s about providing a pathway to help our customers defend their social license to sell pork.”

Hord credited the leadership of the Ohio Pork Council for being proactive about the sustainability issue in realizing that having on-farm reports is only the first step to achieving success in reaching consumers with factual information about how their food is produced in a way that resonate with them. Using the reports and the data they help gather to collaborate with pork chain partners is the next step in the process.

Hord advises producers not to overlook all the things that seem like everyday actions on the farm that could have an impact on sustainability. This could include energy and water conservation, using solar panels, nutrient management, and agronomic practices.

For its part, Sarah Kipp say McDonald’s values the relationship it has with U.S. pork producers and never want to pit one producer versus another in terms of sustainability practices. Further, she says when the company reviews shareholder proposals for sustainability initiatives.

On behalf of all the state’s pork producers, the Ohio Pork Council (OPC) is again partnering with a community-based nonprofit to further demonstrate how much its members are dedicated to bringing high-quality, nutrient-dense protein to those in need. A $2,000 donation from OPC to the SAME Café in Toledo has been used to purchase many pounds of ground pork and bacon, allowing thousands of people in Northwest Ohio to get access to the protein at no cost.

“Donations like this from the Ohio Pork Council are a lifeline to us,” said Rori Quinonez, Executive Director of SAME Café. “We don’t get a lot of high-quality animal protein for our kitchen to use for our meals, so this is an amazing gift for us to use to feed those in need in the Toledo area.”

All guests are invited to participate in the mission by volunteering time, giving produce, or donating money in exchange for their meal. On behalf of all the state’s pork producers, the Ohio Pork Council is again partnering with a community-based nonprofit to further demonstrate how much its members are dedicated to bringing high-quality, nutrient-dense protein to those in need. A $5,000 donation to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, which will be used to purchase pork, will serve thousands of people through the organization’s Mid-Ohio Kitchen based in the south side of Columbus.

Effort highlights producers’ ethic to serve their communities.

On behalf of all the state’s pork producers, the Ohio Pork Council (OPC) is again partnering with a community-based nonprofit to further demonstrate how much its members are dedicated to bringing high-quality, nutrient-dense protein to those in need. OPC is donating $2,500 to New Day Ministries, based in Bucyrus, Ohio, to be used to purchase pork, which will be distributed to those in the area who rely on the organization’s services to receive much-needed nutritional assistance.

“This donation from the Ohio Pork Council allows us to continue to supply the community and our clients with fresh, nutritious food,” said Kaden Thomas, executive director for New Day Ministries in Bucyrus, Ohio. “We strive to provide nutritious food to our community, and this will help us achieve that goal.”

While giving back to the state’s rural and urban communities is a regular part of the OPC’s Pork Power initiative, it’s even more critical during uncertain economic times that are affecting so many Ohioans.

“It’s just part of our nature as farmers to give back,” said Nick Seger, president of the Ohio Pork Council and a producer from Minster, Ohio. “Right now, we know that the need is even greater and we’re so pleased to partner with organizations like this that really make a difference by providing high-quality protein to those who would otherwise not have it.”

“We are thrilled to have Bayleigh join our team as she continues her education in agricultural communications,” says Cheryl Day, OPC Executive Vice President. “We know that she will be an asset to our team in helping to serve our state’s producers as we help to tell the positive story of Ohio’s pig farmers to today’s consumers.”

Miller, who grew up showing dairy feeders and market hogs at her county fair, is looking forward to expanding her knowledge of Ohio’s pork industry by working closely with the state’s producers so that she is better prepared to share their story to consumers about how their food is raised.

At the awards luncheon held during the Ohio Pork Congress on February 8, 2023, several volunteers were recognized for outstanding contributions to the Ohio pork industry. The Ohio Pork Industry Excellence, Service, Pork Promoter of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Friend of Pork Industry awards were presented.

Kicking off the program, Ohio Pork Council President Nick Seger, Shelby County, said, “Looking ahead to 2023, our industry faces challenges, however, the Ohio pork industry is filled with great leaders from top to bottom. The big wins we’ve had don’t mean the fight to protect our industry is over but I am confident we can use this momentum rise to occasion to overcome and adapt.”

Wendell Waters, West Lafayette, Ohio, received the Ohio Pork Industry Excellence Award. Given annually, this award recognizes a pork farmer, or farm family, for their willingness to go above-and-beyond to donate time, money, and talents on behalf of the industry at the state and national level.

Upon receiving the award during the luncheon, Waters said, “It’s a pleasure to be here today, definitely worth the trip. I see many fellows I have worked with for several years, going to Washington, and making other good memories. Thank you very much.”

Waters began his career as a vocational agriculture teacher and later formed WenMar Farms Inc. with his wife, Marcia. Today, WenMar Farms Inc. consists of 4,000 acres of corn and soybeans, and a 3,600-sow farrow-to-finish hog operation. Waters played a key role in the development of the PGI Group in 1994. Waters has been a true champion of Ohio agriculture and the Ohio pork industry for more than 50 years.

The Ohio Pork Industry Service Award goes to an individual who exemplifies outstanding service, exceeding volunteer expectations, and willing to support the pork industry in various ways. This year, the Ohio Pork Council recognized Rich Deaton, Darke County, Ohio, with the 2022 Ohio Pork Industry Service Award.

“Just as the way we communicate today has changed, so has the way we are raising pigs. One thing hasn’t changed and that’s you, pork producers. You get up regardless of polar vortexes or heat indexes above 105 degrees and take care of your pigs. You do this not because you want to but because you care about pigs and want to feed the world. It’s my honor to do this and represent you,” Deaton remarked.

His tenure on the state board, including a term as president, has also led him to participation in countless committees and serving as a Pork Act Delegate. Deaton devotes countless hours to promotion, advancement, and research development.

“This is a wonderful award to receive,” Garee commented. “If you talk to my wife, she will tell you I hold her up 20 minutes in the grocery store every time we go, always talking to people at the meat counter. Last year, I got to work at the Ohio State Fair, cooking pork for the Ohio Pork Council. It was a wonderful experience with long hours. The best part was hanging out, talking with people walking by, telling our story to the community about how we raise our pork, letting them know we’re proud of how we do it.”

Garee has been an active member of the Ohio Pork Council’s Board of Directors and currently serves as the president-elect for the organization. He has been an integral part of the success of events such as the annual PAC Auction at the Ohio Pork Congress and the pork stand at the Ohio State Fair. Along with his efforts within the Ohio Pork Council, Garee works at Kalmbach Feeds as a swine logistics coordinator.

The success of the pork stand at the 2022 Ohio State Fair can be attributed, in part, to Garee’s service as the grill master. His dedication and willingness to learn the art of grilling, smoking, and preparing the pork served at the Taste of Ohio Café reflects his willingness to go above and beyond for the Council. Garee also wore a pig costume, becoming Mr. Pig, during the Ohio State Fair. The time Garee spent as Mr. Pig helped bring attention to the Ohio pork industry at the state fair and increase the presence of OPC on social media.

“This award is a reflection of Cooper Family Farms – my fellow Cooper troopers, contract growers, and the entire swine service team,” Post stated. He went on to thank his family, specifically crediting his parents for their support. “They have instilled compassion, work ethic, and values in me I have displayed. Without their guidance I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Post is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he studied Animal Science. His passion for pork and working with pigs led him to a career with Cooper Farms as the lead service person, where he has been employed since 2012. Throughout Post’s 10 years with Cooper Farms, he has been instrumental in the growth of their hog division while working hand in hand with the contract families who grow with Cooper Farms.

The work of the Ohio Pork Council is made possible by supporters who devote time to enhance the organization’s efforts on behalf of all producers. To acknowledge their efforts and express gratitude, OPC established the Friend of Ohio Pork Industry award. This award recognizes an individual, organization, or company making a substantial impact on the organization through monetary support, voluntary activities, or general support to the pork industry. The Ohio Pork Council honored Former Congressman Bob Gibbs with the Friend of the Pork Industry award this year.

Gibbs recalled being on both sides of the issue for pork production, lobbying when he was a producer and welcoming constituents while serving in the Ohio House and Senate then Congress. “I would tell people I might not have a master’s degree but I have a PhD in economics because I had a hog farm,” he shared. “It’s really important to make those lobbying trips. Farmers are a small number of the population so it’s hard to get Members of Congress to pay attention but they like seeing their constituents. You are the soul of the earth. If it weren’t for farmers producing food fiber, I consider it right up there with national security. We can’t be dependent on other countries to produce our food supply.”

Gibbs began promoting agriculture while attending The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, where he graduated in 1974. His passion for agriculture continued developing through his experiences in leadership within organizations such as the Ohio Farm Bureau. Gibbs moved in the legislative arena where he served three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives and was then elected to the Ohio Senate in 2008. The time he spent in both the House and the Senate allowed him to use his knowledge and passion for agriculture to advocate for Ohio pig farmers. In a time when agriculture needed someone to stand up for them on a national level, Gibbs did just that, serving in Congress from 2011 to 2023.
